MDO Plywood vs Phenolic Plywood: An Engineer’s Comparison

PU stone effect wall panel

Introduction

In concrete formwork, MDO plywood and phenolic plywood are the two most common engineered panel choices. Both offer excellent concrete finish, but their composition, performance, and applications differ significantly.

In this guide, Linyi Solland International Trade Co., Ltd. compares MDO and phenolic plywood so engineers and contractors can choose the right panel for their project.

What Is MDO Plywood?

MDO (Medium Density Overlay) plywood is a plywood panel with a resin-impregnated fiber overlay bonded to one or both faces during manufacture.

Composition:

  • Core: Plywood (typically poplar, birch, or mixed hardwood)
  • Overlay: Resin-impregnated kraft paper (120–180 g/m²)
  • Glue: Phenolic or MUF (waterproof)
  • Surface: Smooth, matte, paint-ready

Manufacturing process:

  1. Plywood core is sanded smooth
  2. Resin-impregnated fiber paper is hot-pressed onto the surface
  3. The overlay creates a hard, smooth, paintable surface
  4. Edges are sealed with paint or edge sealant

What Is Phenolic Plywood?

Phenolic plywood (also called film-faced plywood or phenolic film plywood) is a plywood panel with a phenolic resin film (similar to Formica) bonded to one or both faces.

Composition:

  • Core: Plywood (typically poplar, birch, or eucalyptus)
  • Film: Phenolic resin film (black, brown, or red)
  • Glue: Phenolic (WBP — Weather and Boil Proof)
  • Surface: Glossy/semi-glossy, plastic-like

Manufacturing process:

  1. Plywood core is sanded
  2. Phenolic film is hot-pressed onto the surface (120–150°C)
  3. The film creates a hard, plastic, waterproof surface
  4. Edges are sealed with waterproof paint

MDO vs Phenolic Plywood: Quick Comparison

Feature MDO Plywood Phenolic Plywood
Surface overlay Resin fiber Phenolic film
Surface color Tan, natural Black, brown, red
Surface texture Smooth, matte Glossy, plastic-like
Paintability Excellent (no primer needed) Poor (film rejects paint)
Concrete finish Smooth, slightly textured Very smooth, plastic-like
Reuse cycles 8–15 15–25 (more)
Water resistance High Very high
Chemical resistance High Very high
Cost per m³ $400–$700 $500–$800
Form release Excellent (with release agent) Excellent (built-in)
Best for Architectural concrete, paintable surfaces Standard structural concrete, high reuse

Detailed Performance Comparison

1. Concrete Finish Quality

MDO plywood produces a smooth, slightly matte concrete finish:

  • Concrete color appears natural
  • Surface has slight texture (subtle wood grain transfer)
  • Excellent for architectural concrete that will be visible
  • Can be used with paint or stain directly on concrete

Phenolic plywood produces a very smooth, glossy concrete finish:

  • Concrete color appears lighter (less wood grain transfer)
  • Surface has plastic-like smoothness
  • Excellent for standard structural concrete that will be covered
  • Less natural appearance

For architectural exposed concrete (decorative walls, columns), MDO is preferred. For structural concrete (typical floors, beams), phenolic is preferred.

2. Reuse Cycles

Plywood Type Typical Reuse Cycles With Care
MDO plywood 8–15 15–20
Phenolic plywood 15–25 25–40

Phenolic plywood lasts 2–3x longer because:

  • Film is more resistant to abrasion
  • Film is more waterproof
  • Film releases concrete easier
  • No paint layer to wear off

For projects requiring many reuses (high-rise slab formwork), phenolic is more economical.

3. Water Resistance

Both plywood types use WBP phenolic glue in the core, so the glue line is waterproof. The difference is in the surface:

  • MDO plywood: Surface is paint-quality — water-resistant but not waterproof
  • Phenolic plywood: Surface is plastic film — fully waterproof

For outdoor formwork storage or prolonged rain exposure, phenolic is more durable.

4. Paintability

MDO plywood is excellent for painting:

  • No primer needed
  • Paint adheres well
  • Smooth finish after paint
  • Ideal for signs, soffits, exterior siding that will be painted

Phenolic plywood is not paintable:

  • Film rejects paint adhesion
  • Paint peels or chips off
  • Used as-is (no painting)

5. Form Release

Phenolic plywood has built-in form release:

  • Concrete doesn't stick to the film
  • Easy stripping
  • Less release agent needed
  • Cleaner formwork

MDO plywood requires release agent:

  • Concrete may stick to the fiber surface
  • Release agent (oil or wax) needed
  • More cleaning required

6. Cost Comparison

Plywood Type Price per m³ (USD) Price per 18mm Sheet
MDO plywood $400–$700 $32–$55
Phenolic plywood $500–$800 $40–$65

MDO is 20%–30% cheaper per cubic meter, but phenolic lasts 2–3x longer, so phenolic is often cheaper over the project lifecycle.

7. Edge Sealing

Both types require edge sealing to prevent water ingress:

  • MDO plywood: Edge sealed with acrylic paint or edge sealant
  • Phenolic plywood: Edge sealed with phenolic paint or polyurethane paint

Phenolic plywood has a slight edge sealing advantage because the film is more chemically bonded to the edge.

8. Weight

Both panels have similar weight (same plywood core):

  • 18mm sheet: ~30–35 kg per 1220×2440mm sheet
  • No significant weight difference

9. Environmental Impact

MDO plywood:

  • Uses paper-based overlay (more recyclable)
  • Easier to dispose or recycle at end of life
  • Lower embodied carbon

Phenolic plywood:

  • Uses plastic film (less recyclable)
  • Harder to dispose at end of life
  • Higher embodied carbon

For eco-sensitive projects, MDO has a smaller environmental footprint.
